Der wohl bekannteste Punkt in ganz Jakarta ist der Unabhängigkeitsplatz mit dem National-Denkmal.
Der Platz selbst ist knapp einen Quadratkilometer groß, in der Mitte steht das Monument Nasional (MONAS). Das Denkmal ist 132 Meter hoch und die Spitze ist mit mehr als 30 Kilogramm Gold überzogen.

Glücklicherweise hatte ich den Besuch dort für Samstag Vormittag geplant, da das Begehen der Spitze aufgrund des Fastenmonats nur eingeschränkt möglich ist.
Von oben hat man dann einen tollen Blick auf den umgebenden Park, große Teile der Stadt und auch den Präsidentenpalast, der direkt neben dem Platz gelegen ist.

Und unter dem Denkmal gibt es ein Museum, in welchem die Geschichte Indonesiens anhand von verschiedenen mit kleinen Figuren nachgestellten Szenen gezeigt wird.
So hab ich dann auch erfahren, dass Indonesien in holländischer Hand war, im 2. Weltkrieg an Japan fiel. Direkt danach hat sich Indonesien selbst als unabhängig erklärt. Daraufhin haben dann die Alliierten Mächte versucht das Land anzugreifen um es wieder unter holländische Kontrolle zu bringen.

The most important sport in Jakarta is the Independence Square with their National Monument.
The square is around one square kilometer large and the Monument Nasional (MONAS) is located in the middle of it. The monument is 132 meters tall and the top of it is covered by more than 30 kilograms of gold.

Luckily, I went there Saturday early morning as the access to platform on top of it is limited during the fasting month.
From up there, quite a nice view over the park, large parts of the city as well as the palace of the president located just nearby.

And below the monument, there’s a museum stating the history of Indonesia. For that, they use a lot of sceneries shown using small figures.
That’s where I got to know that Indonesia belonged to the Dutch, fell to Japan in 2 world war. Directly after that, they declared themselves as independent resulting in the allies attacking the country to get it back below the dutch crown.
